Apollo 11’s 50th anniversary owned the fortnight’s heart — the restored mission audio, the CBS rebroadcast in real time, the reminder that they landed with a 1202 PROGRAM ALARM blaring because Margaret Hamilton’s priority-scheduled software shed load EXACTLY as designed and kept the important tasks running while the rendezvous radar spammed interrupts. The most consequential graceful degradation in history, executed 250,000 miles from the nearest rollback, by code whose “asynchronous executive” ideas we’re still rediscovering and renaming (load shedding! priority queues! #110’s gas auctions!). I reread her source-code margin notes annually; “TEMPORARY, I HOPE HOPE HOPE” is the most honest comment ever committed.

Life patch note, a big one: I’ve left the financial giant after four years — and moved HOME. Madurai. A global manufacturing group is building the digital arm of its business here, mission-critical products for customers worldwide on AWS and GCP, and they hired me to build and lead the SRE function from scratch. The platform-team proposal I wrote in January (#147) never launched at the bank; it became my interview portfolio instead, and the new employer bought the pitch wholesale. Four years of enterprise fintech taught me scale; this chapter is about building the discipline from the ground floor — with my mother’s cooking as the relocation package’s headline benefit.

Back on the invoice desk (#146’s theme refuses retirement): the FTC finalized its FACEBOOK settlement — $5 BILLION for the Cambridge Analytica-era violations (#127), the largest privacy fine ever by an order of magnitude… and Facebook’s stock ROSE on the news, the market pricing certainty-of-fine as cheaper than uncertainty-of-process (the #128 survived-theater thesis, now with a nine-zero receipt). Equifax settled its 2017 breach (#115) the same week — up to $700M, including the instantly-memed “$125 cash OR credit monitoring” claim fund that was oversubscribed within days into homeopathic payouts. Two structural conclusions, filed without cynicism (mostly): fines priced below extraction value are license fees; and per-victim restitution divided across breach-scale populations asymptotes to an apology email.

TIL: the 1202 alarm’s actual mechanism — executive overflow, core sets exhausted, scheduled restart preserving high-priority jobs. The lesson isn’t “the software had a bug”; it’s that the RECOVERY was the design. Fifty years on, that’s still the frontier (#142’s GitHub choose-your-failure-mode, ancestral edition).
