The same seven days produced twin case studies in the price of the Chinese market, and the file demands both. First: the Houston Rockets’ GM tweeted support for Hong Kong’s protesters; within 72 hours, Chinese state TV pulled NBA preseason games from schedules, sponsors suspended deals, the league — whose progressive-values branding is a key global strategy — issued a first statement that apologized in two directions at once, and the players got pushed in front of cameras to absorb what the owners wouldn’t. Second: Blizzard banned Hearthstone champion Blitzchung for a year and clawed back his prize money for saying “Liberate Hong Kong” on a post-match stream, then, facing a #BoycottBlizzard revolt spanning its own employees (walkouts under the “Every Voice Matters” campus statue) and US senators from both parties, reduced the sentence in a statement insisting China had nothing to do with it, which persuaded no one anywhere.
The structural note, logged without heat: platform values are priced, and this was the fortnight the price tag became public. Every global company runs a values stack and a revenue stack, and normally the merge conflicts resolve quietly in localization and omission; sufficient market concentration turns the conflict into a segfault on live TV. The earlier Huawei entry described states weaponizing supply chains; this is the mirror, markets weaponizing demand. Dependency graphs again: someone should draw where each of our industries’ revenue concentrates, because that map is the speech policy.
Also: PG&E preemptively blacked out large swaths of California to prevent wildfire ignition from its own aging grid, planned unavailability as liability management, the infrastructure equivalent of turning off the service because you can’t afford the incident (the slow-boil file: infrastructure failing gradually, then suddenly, now seasonally).
