A checkpoint fortnight (the world’s headlines — the President’s COVID diagnosis, a chaotic debate — are logged as facts and left to better chroniclers; the archive keeps its lane and its sanity). Platform team, year one, the honest review I’d want another staff engineer to write me:

WHAT WORKED: golden paths won by being lazy-compatible (#106’s doctrine held — service bootstrap 40 minutes, observability at birth #187, deploy frequency up 3x org-wide with INCIDENT RATE FLAT, the only ratio that matters). The paved road carried the pandemic cutover (#176) without a single platform-layer sev-1, which is the year’s real trophy and precisely as invisible as predicted (#065).

WHAT DIDN’T: I underweighted MARKETING. Internal platforms compete against inertia and Stack Overflow, and “build it and they will come” lost to “build it, demo it quarterly, embed with the loudest skeptic’s team for a sprint, and let THEM present it.” Adoption followed evangelism, not quality — a sentence that cost me two quarters to believe (staff lesson of the year: being right is the entry fee, not the product; #147’s brutally-honest-customers file, matured).

WHAT I’M CHANGING: a public roadmap with a DEPRECATION calendar (#112’s Adobe discipline aimed at ourselves — we built three paved roads and killed zero old paths, so we’re maintaining SIX roads; subtraction is the Q4 OKR).

The F1 season meanwhile approaches its bubble conclusion — Lewis Hamilton closing in on a record-equaling seventh world title in the strangest season ever staged (#186’s controlled experiment producing, fittingly, an asterisk debate the #080 file pre-wrote: titles earned under weird conditions are still titles; the conditions were equally weird for everyone — that’s what “controlled” MEANS).

TIL: the platform-adoption funnel is a real funnel — awareness, trial, habit, advocacy — and measuring it beats measuring feature count by exactly the margin that measuring user outcomes beats measuring deploys. Internal tools are products; products have funnels; funnels have leaks; leaks are the roadmap (#143’s vision-bugs-don’t-hotfix, aimed inward).
